Arrivederci
This body of work explores connections across cultures, generations and continents.
Having been raised in a multicultural household as a first generation South African,
the theme of identity and connection to heritage is evident throughout this body of
work.
With grandparents being born in a small town known for medieval architecture and
art, the prints from the series Arrivederci incorporate some of the characteristics of
artworks found in that region with animals and imagery associated with South Africa.
The flattened style in which the animals and figures are created with gold accenting
are reminiscent of medieval and byzantine art, along with the gold leafing seen in
illuminated manuscripts. The creatures are not unlike medieval beasts and monsters
spoken about in folklore but are made up of distinctly South African wildlife such as
wild dog, honey badger and hyena.
The Italian word “arrivederci” translates to “goodbye”, but a more accurate translation
would be “see you again”. This body of work is not only a way in which to draw
connections between family, history and culture but a homage to those who came
before; and a promise to honour them.
