Biography

Blessing n Blaai (b. April 1994, Johannesburg) is an artist whose roots in the suburban landscape of Troyeville have significantly shaped and influenced his creative journey. Initially honing his skills at 32 Flavors Art Studio, Blaai delved into painting, drawing, and printmaking. His artistic exploration continued at Artist Proof Studio in Johannesburg, where he specialised in printmaking for three years.

Blaai’s artistic expression prominently includes paints, watercolours, ink, and, more recently, mixed media. Beyond conceptual art, he has established himself as a muralist, contributing to both public and private commissions. His participation in various mural projects, including collaborations on city-commissioned artworks, underscores his dedication to transforming urban spaces through art. In addition to his muralist endeavours, Blaai has participated in significant group exhibitions such as “African Mobilities: This is not a Refugee Camp.” Moreover, he has actively contributed to community engagement initiatives, notably through his involvement in an art facilitation program with The Market Foundation. In this capacity, he played a key role in facilitating visual art activities at the Windy Brow Theatre, offering creative outlets for children residing in and around Hillbrow, Johannesburg.

In the Shadows is a solo exhibition by Blessing Blaai, showcasing a series of painted works.

This body of work is a continuous journey between the present, the past, the flesh, and the afterlife.

The lingering of memories in certain spaces, the longing of being seen and needed.
