I see my lastest work as a continuation of what I have been doing for the past 5 years. In many ways I consider my work and conceptual approach to be very detached from the circumcision rituals that I am known for. I now attempt to tap into elements of intrinsic knowledge, about the existence and co-existence of man – whether white or black, in Africa. When I conceived these works I was experiencing a certain amount of knowledge and truth about the land and its smells, the people (not urban people), the sweat, the heat, the colours and sounds, as well as its mystery and history. This sums up a single concept that I consider to be the “basic-truth” of our existence in Africa. I consider my work to be a testimony of the knowledge of who we are, an awareness that we as people like to forget or sugarcoat with the sensational brush of the media. Sometimes we console ourselves by embracing the fast paced advancements of today, or we are just simply bewildered by urbanisation and technology. Young people like me, do not know much about the “past”, relying more on instinct, for example, my awareness of being African is not entirely in the practicality of it, but mostly in the instinctive knowledge of it, and that is what I attempt to express in my work.
