ark.contemporary started out showcasing the work of local Rosendal artists although, has grown to exhibit emerging and established contemporary artists from across the country who the gallery felt matched their vision and aesthetic.
This exhibition aims to broaden awareness for the contemporary Free State art space in addition to acknowledging their four-year anniversary. Several of the artists that were invited work with landscape and eco themes while others have a decidedly urban voice. Some cross over and probe these foci. The exhibition intends to bring a fresh reading in the juxtaposition and combination of these perspectives under a central aesthetic.
The title, ‘Fertile Ground’, celebrates the gallery’s rural context and goal to expand the appreciation and exhibition of contemporary art outside the urban centers of South Africa.
