Artist Statement

“My work is mostly inspired by indigenous people (in Africa) and their life style. I find the house hold of the indigenous people in Africa very interesting, the objects/still life that one find in every house hold. You either find objects like clay pots, some old bottles( which in many case are inherited from our ancestor to store traditional medicines and herbs). I have always admired the still life paintings from the West, but I had my own perspective of what still life looks like to me as an African.
I have this edge in me to transform the Western traditional way of still life painting. I am appropriating indigenous vocabulary, in imagery, use of colour & language in my painting. I am at the same time not doing a realistic images by I am trying to create the realistic feeling. You will always find images of bottles, pots, Cups etc. I call all this process” Painting & looking at the still life from an African Perspective”
